City of Johnson City to reopen some City buildings next week

The City of Johnson City’s second phase of reopening begins Monday, June 8 with all visitors required to wear face coverings when entering City buildings. Screening measures including temperature checks will also be in place.

Beginning June 8, City Hall offices, the Administrative and Athletic offices at Winged Deer Park, Langston Centre, and Carver Recreation Center will reopen. The Finance Lobby at City Hall remains closed due to construction, and basketball games will not be permitted at Carver Recreation Center per state recommendations.

“The City is continuing to follow guidelines and recommendations provided by Gov. Bill Lee and his economic recovery group as well as the CDC and public health officials,” said City Manager Pete Peterson. “Our goal with the phased reopening is to safely allow activities to resume while mitigating the risk of new COVID-19 cases. Decisions and timing of future openings will continue to be influenced by public health metrics.”

The following will remain closed or suspended until further notice, per state/CDC guidelines:

  • Transit lobby
  • Memorial Park Community Center
  • Contact sports as defined by the state
  • Playgrounds
  • Athletic tournaments
  • Outdoor basketball courts
  • Drinking fountains

The following are closed/canceled for the season:

  • Legion Street Pool
  • Rotary Park Splash Pad
  • Concert series
  • Independence Day Fireworks Celebration at Freedom Hall Civic Center

As a reminder, all parks as well as tennis, pickleball and volleyball courts are open, as is Pine Oaks Golf Course. While contact sports are prohibited, training and other activities that do not involve close contact with others are permitted. Guidelines for all facilities will be posted, and adherence is mandatory.
