BBC - Board of Building Codes

The Board of Building Codes is a committee that hears and decides appeals and variances to the Johnson City Building Code. It also decides questions of code interpretation, oversees examinations of contractors to perform work in the community, and recommends code changes. This board meets on the first Tuesday of each month starting at 4 p.m. on an as-needed basis. These meetings are held at the Muncipal and Safety Building, 601 E. BDSR - Board of Dwelling Standards and Review

The Board of Dwelling Standards and Review determines whether dwellings are fit for human habitation and requires specific remedial measures necessary for dwellings designated as unfit. This board meets on the fourth Thursday of each month starting at 7 p.m. except for November and December. There will be no meetings in the months of November and December unless a special called meeting is requested by the Board. These meetings are held at the Muncipal and Safety Building, 601 E. BZA - Board of Zoning Appeals

Local Boards of Zoning Appeals are authorized by the Tennessee Code Annotated to consider variances, special exceptions, administrative reviews, and Zoning Code interpretations. The BZA meets the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Commission Chambers of the Municipal and Safety Building, 601 E. HZC - Historic Zoning Commission 

The Johnson City Historic Zoning Commission reviews all requests for the establishment of Historic Districts and processes applications for Certificates of Appropriateness for

  1. changes in external appearance of existing structures;
  2. design of new structures and additions; and
  3. for demolition of existing structures within established Historic Districts.

The HZC meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Commission Chambers of the Municipal and Safety Building, 601 E. JCRPC - Johnson City Regional Planning Commission

The Johnson City Regional Planning Commission consists of 10 citizens, eight of whom are appointed to three-year terms by the Mayor while two are held by City Commissioners or their designees. The Planning Commission reviews all rezonings, annexations, and right-of-way abandonments and makes recommendations for approval or denial to the Board of Commissioners. The Planning Commission also makes recommendations on land use policy issues through the subdivision regulations, zoning ordinance, and the comprehensive plan. The Planning Commission meets at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the Commission Chambers of the Municipal and Safety Building, 601 E.
