Public Works Stormwater Division celebrates Earth Day

First observed in 1970, Earth Day highlights the importance of safeguarding and promoting our valuable natural resources. The Public Works Stormwater Division recognizes its key role in enhancing the community’s quality of life through the protection of one of the most essential of these resources, our water.

“As we celebrate Earth Day on April 22, we encourage residents to join us in protecting our water resources,” said Operations Manager Jeremy Jones.

The Stormwater Division manages the municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) within the City limits. Unlike sanitary sewers that collect and treat wastewater, storm sewers gather runoff from streets and parking areas, discharging it untreated directly into waterways.

“Polluted stormwater often affects our water sources, which can have an adverse effect on human health and increase environmental cleanup costs,” added Environmental Specialist Theresa White. “Stormwater can pick up and carry debris, chemicals, and other pollutants to our waterways making them unsafe for human consumption and enjoyment.”

Examples of common pollutants include:

  • Litter
  • Oil, grease and gasoline
  • Sediment from construction sites and urban runoff
  • Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, cleaning solutions and other chemicals
  • Pet waste
  • Yard waste including leaves and grass clippings
  • Bacteria

The following are ways you can celebrate Earth Day and safeguard our waterways today and for future generations:

  • Minimize household waste and participate in disposal and recycling programs.
  • Ensure proper disposal of all trash, debris and chemicals.
  • Volunteer with local groups to cleanup and protect local waterways.
  • Raise awareness by distributing information and educating friends and family.
  • Share suggestions on ways to improve the City’s Stormwater Management Program.
