Johnson City Fire Department to host child safety seat checkpoint

Forty-six percent of child safety seats are used incorrectly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Johnson City Fire Department (JCFD) wants to help make sure the smallest members of your family are secured properly.

JCFD is teaming up with Niswonger Children’s Hospital to host a child safety seat checkpoint. During the event, car seat technicians with the JCFD will install child safety seats for caregivers, inspect safety seats to ensure they are installed correctly and provide information on how to choose the correct safety seat for your child.

“The services we provide to the city are not limited to fire education, prevention and suppression. We also want to help ensure that our children are protected,” said JCFD Chief David Bell.

Niswonger Children’s Hospital will also be on hand to share information about the resources it offers to help keep children safe.

The child safety seat checkpoint will take place Jan. 29 at Station 9, 105 Carroll Creek Road, from 2-6 p.m. Additional checkpoints will be scheduled at different locations throughout the year. Child safety seat checks are not limited to these events. Typically, at least one car seat technician works every JCFD shift.
