Johnson City Public Art to host sculpture tour with exhibition juror

The 2023-2025 Phil Pindzola Biennial Sculpture Exhibition juror, Isaac Duncan III, will conduct a tour of the leased outdoor sculptures on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m. The tour will begin at Founders Park and will cover all pieces that are easily accessible by foot. Attendees will meet by the restrooms at The Pavilion at Founders Park, 105 W. Main St., and then proceed through the park.

The exhibition’s 14 pieces were installed earlier this summer and will remain in Johnson City for a two-year period. Funded through private donations, the exhibition began in 2013 and has become a defining feature of Founders Park and nearby areas.

In an effort to bring public artworks to a wider array of spaces within the city, several sculptures in the current round were installed at large intersections in north Johnson City. These can be found at the intersections of North Roan Street and John Exum Parkway, North Roan Street and Princeton Road, and North Roan Street and Bristol Highway. Leased sculptures are available for purchase, either for personal enjoyment or for donation to the City.

Juror Isaac Duncan III is an internationally renowned sculptor, fabricator, educator and arts advocate based in Chattanooga, Tenn. Among his many professional accolades are artist residences at Gallery 37/Archi-Treasures, Illinois; the Richard Hunt Studio Center, Michigan; and the Association of Visual Artist, Tennessee; and a Tennessee Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship. A champion for the discipline of sculpture, Duncan is past-president of Mid-South Sculpture Alliance and currently sits on various art boards and committees, including International Sculpture Center, ArtsBuild, and the Tennessee Arts Commission granting committees.
