ON TRACK HOMEWORK HELPERS

The program features supervised assistance with homework and academic subjects. Tutoring is offered in all subjects and assistance for special project is also available. Robert McKinney is available by appointment only from 5 – 7 p.m.


AFTER SCHOOL INSTITUTE 
The institute will explore STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematic topics by rotating through three learning zones each afternoon. The learning zones include: Techno Park (engineering and technology), LabWorks (physics), Kitchen Chemistry, Musical Movements, Spotlight Theatre, ArtsZone and Media Lab. All activities are hands on, experiential learning projects that enforce and enhance curriculum standards, next gteneration science standards, phenomena-based learning and follow student’s natural curiosity.

Students will learn about theatre, productions, public speaking and set design. They will develop a production about multicultural awareness that will be presented to local after school programs.

Students will learn about game theory, strategy, practice the game and host the Langston Chess Open where players from the region will be invited to compete.

Students will learn about different art medium each week, the history of that medium and then present a show at Nelson Fine Art and Frames, where families and the community will be invited to appreciate the master pieces.

Students will learn study biological forms from macroscopic to microscopic views and will develop and prepare a live salt water tank.

Students will learn about many different forms of literature and create their own portfolio of written works. Participants will read two books and will aid in creating discussion topics and lesson plans from the selected works. All literature will focus on multicultural topics.

Students will study different cultures in a very tasty way! Each month class will focus on a different country and then create culinary masterpieces. Students will host a family night and will prepare foods from global communities.

This new program is designed for our older students. Students in this group will be given independent and group community projects that will require research, development and presentation. Students will actively participate in developing and presenting lesson plans to other students throughout the session. Students will be given roles and responsibilities that will further develop their skills. These students will also participate in college preparedness, scholarship research and test prep activities. The program is intended to set graduates up for success.
