Programs

On Track Homework Helpers 
Location: Carver Recreation Center

The program is designed for grades k-12 and features supervised homework assistance with Robert McKinney, Adrienne Tarter, & ETSU students. One on one tutoring as well as special projects assistance in school work.

Langston Linguistics

Students will learn basic conversational phrases, numbers, colors, and review the alphabet in Spanish, Russian, French, Japanese, Mandarin, and ASL (American Sign Language).  The students will explore the cultures in which these languages originated and the geography of the countries, both historic and modern, where these languages are spoken.  We have partnered with the ETSU Foreign Languages Department to provide in-depth content for our students.

Game Theory & Chess Club

Students will learn about game theory and strategy.  The older students will be participating in the Langston First Generation Investors Club where they will learn about the stock market by tracking and researching the stocks and companies they have chosen.  We will also have a Langston Chess Team that will practice chess weekly; we will then host the “Langston Chess Open” where players from the region will be welcome to compete.

Arts & Humanities

The students will learn about and practice different art forms from different cultural origins and various time periods.  We will learn about those cultures and why the art form is so important in their history and identity.  The students will then choose a few of their pieces to include in the Spring Langston Art Show at Nelson Fine Art Gallery where families and the community will be invited to appreciate the artwork created by Langston students.

Biology Society

Students will study biological forms from macroscopic to microscopic views, learn about ecosystems, biomes, anatomy, and plant science.  We will develop a garden of different plants (carnivorous, rare, global origins) and will make observations and lab reports regarding our findings of these varied plants.  Students will learn about plants, how they function, and the interactions of plants with the environment as a whole.

Students will learn about many different forms of literature and create their own portfolio of written works.  We will be reading two books this session and the students will aid in creating discussion topics and lesson plans for the selected works.  All literature will focus on multicultural topics.

Future City Team

Students selected for the Team will participate in a National Futer City Competition.  Each year 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students embark on a transformative experience as they explore how to make the world a better place.  Working in teams, participants spend 4 months imagining, researching, designing, and building cities of the future.

Langston Debates

TANK Team

Students will be exploring the world under the waves!  We have a 75 gallon salt water aquarium that the students will be studying, researching, and choosing what animals will come live at Langston!  We will begin with a strictly Coral Tank and then will add animals as our confidence grows.

Chemistry Magic!

Students will be exploring the world of chemicals!  We will learn: what is a solution, what is a mixture, what is an atom, how do we know how they are going to react with one another, and (most importantly) what other chemical elements might we find in the future?  All students will be familiar with basic chemistry and the Periodic Table of Elements.

Engineering 101

Students will explore many different types of engineering:  mechanical, electrical, construction, and more!  We will learn about how engineering solves humankinds’ problems and what new technology we have that will aid us in the next decades to come.

Robotics Golden Tigers Team

Students will learn the basic of robotics including augmented reality, 3D printing, and electrical engineering.  The students will eventually participate in an Underwater Rover Robotics Competition.  We have partnered with Tennessee College of Applied Technology, Elizabethton to provide some unique experiences and visits for the students.

This is a new program for our older students that we are very excited about!  Students in this group will be given independent and group community projects that require research, development and presentation.  The students will develop and present lesson plans to the other students throughout the session. Langston High students will be given roles and responsibilities that will further develop their leadership skills. These students will also participate in college preparedness, scholarship research, and test prep activities.
