Instructor: Fred Alsop
Cost: Free

Join Fred Alsop, director for the museum for the 14 years since it was dedicated, as he discusses the George L. Carter Railroad Museum on the campus of ETSU.  The talk will cover some of its history and its name and highlight the operating model railroad layouts in 4 scales that we have on display.  I will focus on the ET&WNC RR layout (the Tweetsie) that originally started as a narrow-gauge railroad in Johnson City and went to Cranberry, NC to carry back iron ore from the mines there.  The railroad eventually connected Johnson City with Boone, NC.

Our layout depicts many of the historic sites along the historic railway and it has been nationally published in a model railroad magazine for 7 consecutive years.  I will also speak to the outreach programs the museum provides annually for the public that includes the Annual Big Train Show and several rail excursions. Please Pre-register.

FREE TAX ASSISTANCE
Volunteers working through AARP-VITA will prepare your Federal taxes for free beginning Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at the Memorial Park Community Center. Acceptance of tax documents will be by appointment only between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Friday until April 8. Due to the ongoing Covid pandemic, tax preparers and taxpayers will wear masks.

Taxpayers will have an initial intake interview with a tax counselor. Then the taxpayer will be asked to leave while the return is being completed. Approximately an hour later, the taxpayer will return to review their return with the tax counselor, receive their completed tax return and their tax documents. If the return is for a married couple, both spouses must be present for both appointments.

All volunteers are trained using IRS and AARP-VITA standards and must pass an IRS test. They can prepare all individual and joint tax returns, with a few exceptions for certain complicated returns. There are no age or income limitations for this free service. For appointments, please call the 423-434-6237 starting January 10, 2022.

You must bring your Social Security card and the Social Security cards of all dependents on the return, photo identification for all individuals, and all tax documents such as W-2s, 1099-Rs, SSA-1099s, 1099-Bs, 1099-INTs and 1099-DIVs, as well as your filed 2020 tax return. If you received advanced child tax credits, the IRS will send a letter 6419 which you will need to bring with you. If you purchased health insurance through the Marketplace, you must also bring your form 1095-A, which you will receive from the federal government. Until you have received all needed forms, the volunteers will be unable to complete your returns. This is an appointment only service, we will not be able to accept walk-ins.
