Johnson City Fire Department hosts ceremony to honor firefighters

During a Tuesday evening ceremony, the Johnson City Fire Department (JCFD) celebrated the accomplishments of its team at the 2024 Service Awards ceremony at Memorial Park Community Center. The event, attended by Johnson City leadership, Commissioners, and firefighters and their families, honored the excellence, bravery and dedication of the department’s personnel.

“It takes a special person to be a firefighter. They wear many hats and carry many heavy responsibilities to protect lives and property in our community. They are heroes in Johnson City, and their excellence is something that fire departments across our nation should emulate,” said Mayor Todd Fowler.

Notable awards presented at the celebration included:

Firefighter of the Year – Lt. Ben Blevins

Company Citation – Engine 2C (Lt. Shane Malone, Driver/Engineer Robbie Williams, and Lt. Kaitlin Asbury)

Letter of Commendation – Lt. Josh Franklin

Letter of Commendation – Lt. Todd Justice

Chief David Bell reflected on the Department’s achievements and expressed his gratitude to the firefighters.

“It is a privilege to be a part of the Johnson City Fire Department, and it is an honor to have the opportunity to work alongside each of you. I look forward to continuing the Department’s mission of service and commitment to excellence in the years to come,” he said.

In addition to award presentations, firefighters who received promotions from 2022 to present were also recognized.

City Manager Cathy Ball spoke at the ceremony and commended the JCPD for their dedication to the City.

“I am immensely proud of our fire department and the exceptional service the men and women provide to our community,” she said. “They consistently go above and beyond to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents, often putting their own lives at risk to do so. We are fortunate to have such a talented and devoted team serving Johnson City.”
