Senior Services offers health and wellness presentations, classes

Senior Services at Memorial Park Community Center, 510 Bert St., will offer the following in July:  

  • Good Old Summertime Wellness Tips: 11 a.m.-noon, Wednesday, July 7. Summertime brings more outdoor time but it does expose people to a few more risks such as ticks, bees and heat stroke. Discussion will include sun safety as well as how to avoid picnic food poisoning, stings, poison ivy and more. All ages. Free.
  • Post Covid – Lingering Symptoms and Concerns: 1-2 p.m., Wednesday, July 21. Most people who have Covid-19 recover quickly, but some have long-term symptoms, such as fatigue, shortness of breath, joint and muscle pain, mood problems, blood clots, organ damage and more. Jill Jones, RN, MHA and Sandi Wolever, RN, ACM, with Ballad Health’s Center for Post-Covid Care, will discuss these concerns and the help that is available. 18 and older. Free.  
  • Memory Loss: What’s Normal, What’s Not: 10-11 a.m. Monday, July 26. Attendees will learn some of the key differences between normal age-related forgetfulness and more serious memory problems, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. Research-based prevention strategies for keeping the brain healthy and active will also be discussed. 18 and older. Free.
  • Get the Facts About Cataracts: 1-2 p.m., Wednesday, July 28. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among those 55 and older. Johnson City Eye Clinic Certified Ophthalmic Assistant and Patient Surgical Counselor Deana Morganstern will discuss cataracts and the latest advances in surgery. 18 and older. Free.
