Board of Commissioners to hold public hearing on Bridge Plan

The Johnson City Board of Commissioners will consider adoption by ordinance of the Bridge Plan, a five-year extension of the 2020 City of Johnson City Comprehensive Plan, on Thursday, May 20 at 6 p.m. at the Municipal and Safety Building, 601 E. Main St. This reading of the ordinance will include a public hearing.

The City’s Development Services Department recently completed a review and assessment of the 2020 Comprehensive Plan. Originally adopted by the City Commission in the mid-2000s, the Comprehensive Plan was intended to serve as a 15-year guide for the City of Johnson City and its surrounding areas. The review resulted in an update of the document to provide guidance to decision-makers and leaders for an additional five-year period.

“The 2020 Comprehensive Plan is a well-written document and most aspects of it are still highly relevant today,” said Development Services Director Preston Mitchell. “With 2020 being a Census year, the Planning Division proposed the Bridge Plan to serve as a transition document until that data can be made available and utilized as the baseline for a new, full-scale comprehensive plan.”

The Bridge Plan retains the goals and objectives of the recommendations included in the original comprehensive plan. The primary focus of revisions to the document are at the action or task level with minor revisions to the policy level. In addition, emerging topics and issues were identified as areas to be addressed in the development of the next comprehensive plan.

The review was conducted by Planning Division staff as well as more than a dozen partner organizations. Public input was an integral part of the process, which included a schedule of public meetings, workshops and hearings. Interested persons are invited to attend and comment on the plan during the upcoming public hearing. Anyone who wishes to speak is asked to complete this form: https://cojctn.wufoo.com/forms/public-input/.
