Student artists, teachers celebrated at ceremony to unveil banners

A dedication ceremony held today (Wednesday, May 25) at 5 p.m. at the Niswonger Children’s Hospital Natural Adventure Area, 106 W. King St., recognized the talented art instructors and students who participated in a Children’s Banner Exhibition organized by the Johnson City Public Art Committee (JCPAC).

The JCPAC invited all local K-4 schools to submit up to five student artworks for consideration, and a selection committee chose 28 artworks for display. The artworks were printed on vinyl banners and will be installed on the lampposts in the Natural Adventure Area.

The following schools and art instructors participated in the project: Ashley Academy (Jackie Vaughn), Cherokee Elementary (Sherri Pugh), Fairmont Elementary (Lindsey Huff), Lake Ridge Elementary (Ann Ferenbach), Mountain View Elementary (Joanna Barnett), North Side Elementary (Westley Harris), Providence Academy (Jamie Burns), South Side Elementary (Monet LaClair), St. Mary’s Catholic School (Felicia Faniola-Gregory), University School (Kristin Colson), and Woodland Elementary (Jennifer Burgess).

Individual student artists completed many of the selected artworks, and some were collaborations between two or more students. The designs draw on a wide variety of themes, ranging from play, animals, and nature to space, music, and abstract designs.
