A solid waste fee is automatically assessed to each water meter account. The current charge is $9 per month. Services for this fee include curbside garbage collection and recycling, appliance and furniture collection, brush collection, and leaf collection.
Backdoor garbage collection is available for a $24 monthly fee.
Containers for Automated Collection
Approximately 95% of the city has automated waste collection. For those areas of the city, residents are provided with one 95 gallon refuse cart at no charge. This is the only container authorized for automated collection by the City. Only waste placed in the container provided and/or sold by the City will be collected. Any additional bags, boxes, or other containers will not be collected. If one cart is not sufficient, residents may purchase additional carts to be collected weekly for a one-time annual fee. City ordinance requires the removal of the cart from the street no later than midnight on the day of collection. The maroon garbage container provided by the City is assigned to the household and remains the property of the City of Johnson City. If the resident moves, the container should be washed and left for use by the next resident.
Containers for Manual Collection
Garbage must be in a container no larger than 30 gallons with the exception of the 95 gallon refuse carts sold by the City. Heavy duty plastic trash bags may be used, but maximum weight for cans and bags is 50 lbs. Boxes are not an acceptable container. Residents may purchase a 95 gallon refuse cart for $50 plus tax at the Solid Waste Services Division, 91 New St., Johnson City. Residents and businesses using more than one cart will be required to purchase a decal and place it on the cart in order for it to be collected. Washington County Residents
The Solid Waste Services Division provides weekly household waste collection throughout Washington County. Your garbage container should be set out no later than 6 a.m. on your scheduled collection day. Call (423)975-2792 for your collection day. A holiday schedule is listed below. Customers may sign up for this service at the Municipal and Safety Building (City Hall), 601 E. Main St., Johnson City. There is a one-time $25.00 service charge due at sign-up. You must provide a photo ID, the last 4 digits of your social security number, and the full service address. Regular business hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Curbside collection is $16 per month for one refuse cart; $24 for two carts. Backdoor garbage collection is $27 per month. For more information, call customer service at (423)975-2792.
Only garbage placed in the green refuse cart provided by the Solid Waste Division will be collected. This container remains the property of the City of Johnson City and must be replaced by the customer if damaged, destroyed, or stolen. Replacement cost is $50. Containers should be removed from the roadside within 24 hours after collection.
The green refuse cart provided by the City of Johnson City is the only container that will be collected. Other items such as furniture, appliances, tires, building material, yard waste, etc. will not be collected.
