13th Annual Turkey Trot Kickoff Held at Sulphur Springs Elementary School

(JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.)The place to be on Thanksgiving morning is the 13th annual Turkey Trot in Johnson City.

The 5K Road Race and Family Fun Run/Walk is set for Thursday, Nov. 22. As always, the Turkey Trot will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Legion Street in Johnson City, near Memorial Park Community Center. An awards ceremony for the overall winners will be held at Cardinal Park immediately following the race.

“This is a tradition for our community,” said Race Chairwoman Jenny Brock. “The Turkey Trot kicks off the holiday season in the best way – with friends, family and a healthy run or walk before the feast.”

The Turkey Trot welcomes competitive runners, casual runners, walkers, kids, strollers, wheelchairs, handcycles, and dogs. It’s an all-inclusive good time for participants of all ages and abilities.

Children have a strong presence at the Turkey Trot, and area schools are awarded cash prizes based on participation. This year, classrooms are asked to choreograph a signature Turkey Trot dance to the song “Let’s Turkey Trot” by Little Eva. Video submissions will be posted on Facebook, and the one with the most likes/shares wins. The winning students will be featured on WJHL, receive vouchers to Quantum Leap, and will perform their original dance routine on stage at the Turkey Trot. The classroom will receive $500.

“We discovered this great song that just needs a great dance to go with it,” said Race Director Karen Hubbs. “We can’t wait to see all our participants shaking their tail feathers Thanksgiving morning.”

Details about the contest can be found at www.jcturkeytrot.com. Deadline for entries is Nov. 11.

Charitable Giving

In the past 10 years, the Turkey Trot has awarded more than $156,000 to organizations that promote health, wellness, and quality of life in our area. From last year’s event, more than $24,000 was given to Tannery Knobs Bike Park, East Tennessee State University, the Turkeys in Training program, the Johnson City Police Department, and the Johnson City Fire Department.
