COMMUNITY RELATIONS DEPARTMENT
Mission Statement: The Community Relations Department focuses on relationship building and providing information services to the citizens of Johnson City, the Board of Commissioners, the media, and City employees. It is our goal to develop an informed community, a knowledgeable organization, and foster a positive City image in the community and beyond.PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Office of Community Relations activities as performed by the department can be categorized in four main function areas: (1) public information (2) media relations (3) education (4) commissions and employee relations.1. Public information activities such as PSA’s for city’s events, as well as related boards and commissions, writing and illustration of publications such as the annual report calendar, youth activity documents, informational brochures, coordination of displays and promotions such as Johnson City Night with the Cardinals, Appalachian Fair, advertisements for special and/or annual events or programs, programming for the Government Information Cable Channel - JCTV, and website electronic mail correspondences.
2. Media relations includes providing timely news releases to area media, writing articles for local, regional and state publications, assisting with the organization of information contacts, news events and conferences for different city wide departments, and providing media guidance for employees and related associations.
3. Education activities development of citizen governmental educational class JC-101 course, tours and presentations for school groups and youth organizations, organized events such as Leadership 2015 - "Government Day/Public Safety", Local Government Day for SHHS seniors, participation in career fairs and “shadow” programs for area schools, as well as coordinating internships from ETSU and Milligan College, preparation of informational brochures about local government, arrangements of speakers for civic and community groups.
4. Commission/employee relations includes production of the employee newsletter NewsLink , coordinating events such as receptions and swearing-in ceremonies, preparation of expressions of appreciation, proclamations and resolutions, coordinating participation in community events, blood drives and parades, also arranging volunteers for community services needs with related associations.
