What GIS is:

There is no doubt that for many, the term GIS is synonymous with mapping. Technically, it is not. Rather GIS technology improves upon traditional mapping by relating attributes to spatial features, which enable users to query and analyze data spatially. For this reason, the strength of a GIS can be attributed to the related databases, not the maps. Mapping is simply a product of GIS. GIS is about Managing Data. (See Diagram: Permission of R. A. Smith & Associates, Inc.)

There are four major components of a GIS. These components are hardware, software, data and people. They are all equally important in determining the success of a GIS implementation. Without each one of these critical components a GIS cannot be successful. GIS Division continues to communicate the importance of each of these components in services to Johnson City.
