INSPECTIONS
The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for Fire and Building Code inspections and plans review for all new construction of commercial and some residential structures. Other inspections done by the Prevention Division include adoption inspections, and home safety & chimney inspections(upon request) . Plans reviews are done on structures as well as fire alarm, sprinkler and hood system installations for commercial buildings.

The City of Johnson City, under City Ordinance Number 3663, section 10-26, has adopted all volumes of the 1998 Edition of the National Fire Protection Association, the 1997 Edition of the Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI) Standard Fire Prevention Code, and all supplements published. In the event of a conflict between the SBCCI Code and NFPA Code requirements, the more stringent of the two will apply.

INVESTIGATIONS
Fires are investigated by the Prevention Division if the cause of the fire is juvenile set, suspicious, intentionally set or if a cause is undetermined. If a cause of a fire is determined to be arson, the Division makes the arrest and presents the case in all court proceedings. If the fire is determined to be juvenile set, the Division has established a Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Program to educate the juvenile on the dangers of firesetting.
