The City of Johnson City has a variety of committees that are working constantly to serve you better. The Boards and Committees involve residents of the City of Johnson City and regional area who volunteer their time and expertise for the benefit of the community.

CURRENT OPENINGS

Appointments for the Johnson City Volunteer Boards and Committees take place semi-annually in January and July, with applications being accepted October and November for January appointments, and April and May for July appointments. Applications received late or for boards without vacancies will be held on file for one calendar year in case of unexpected vacancies.

 

Applications are currently being accepted for the following boards.

 

City seeking applications for multiple vacancies on volunteer boards and committees

The Johnson City Board of Commissioners is accepting applications for appointments to the following volunteer boards and committees. All appointments are scheduled to be made in July.

 

  • BrightRidge Board of Directors: Serves as a liaison between BrightRidge’s customers and management.
  •  

    • One appointment for a four-year term. City residency required.

     

  • Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors: The CVB is to showcase the uniqueness of and develop increased civic interest in the Johnson City as an attraction to tourists, visitors and individuals; to solicit special events to take place in Johnson City; to promote the distinctive resources of Johnson City; and to increase the economic contribution of tourism in order to grow Johnson City and relieve the burdens of government.
  • Two appointments, each for three-year terms. One position requires management level employment within the lodging industry. Applicants for the remaining position must be directly associated with tourism, hospitality, entertainment, retail, finance, or special events. City residency or employment within the municipal limits required.

 

  • Health and Educational Facilities Board: Aids medical and educational facilities in obtaining tax free loans as allowed by a combination of Federal and State of Tennessee Statutes.
  •  

    • One appointment, each for six-year term.

     

  • Housing and Community Development Advisory Board: Advises and makes recommendations concerning housing, community, and economic development issues.
  •  

    • Six appointments, each for three-year terms. City residency required.

     

  • Johnson City Development Authority: Promote and assist with the development and redevelopment of Johnson City, with specific emphasis on the downtown district and support for the local business community.
  •  

    • Three appointments, with term length not to exceed three years.

     

  • Johnson City Public Library Board: Governing body and controlling fiscal authority for the public library. For information, contact Julia Turpin at [email protected], 423-434-4457.
  •  

    • Two appointments, each for three-year terms. City residency required.

     

  • Johnson City Regional Planning Commission: Administers the City’s Subdivision Regulations and for advising the City Commission on matters of long-range development policy, zoning and annexation.
  •  

    • Five appointments for a three-year term. City residency required.

     

  • Johnson City Senior Services Advisory Council: Makes recommendations on matters affecting planning, support, and programming for the Center.
  •  

    • One appointment for a six month term. City residency required.

     

  • Parks and Recreation Advisory Board: Makes recommendations regarding recreation services and facilities.
  •  

    • Three appointments, each for three-year terms. City residency required.

     

  • Public Art Committee: Considers matters concerning public art, monuments, murals, or other creative efforts of individuals or groups.
  •  

    • Three appointments, each for three-year terms.

     

  • The Senior Foundation Inc. – Johnson City Board: Responsible for supporting and participating in special events and assisting in fundraising efforts to benefit Senior Center operations, services, and/or capital improvements.
  •  

    • Two appointments each for 2 ½ year terms. Residency in Washington, Sullivan, Unicoi, or Carter County required.

     

  • Tri-Cities Regional Airport Authority: Owns and operates the Tri-Cities Regional Airport Authority and consists of five standing committees: administration and operation, airfield development, foreign trade, executive and marketing.
  •  

    • One appointment, for a three-year term.

 

Any citizen interested in serving may submit an application online at www.johnsoncitytn.org/boards. The deadline for applications is Friday, May 31st . Applications are kept on file for one year. PUBLIC COMMENT

Public comment is welcomed at each board and committee meeting of the City of Johnson City. Comments are limited to actionable items on the meeting agenda. Successful completion and submission of this form at least 12 hours in advance of the meeting start time is required. Comments may not exceed three minutes. Each public comment period is limited to 12 speakers, who will be determined based on order of receipt of request form. For requests that cannot be accommodated, the requestor will be notified prior to the meeting.
